New artists to the label Alex Bau (CLR/Zenit) and Marco Polo (Toneaman) team up as the Gordon blue Orchestra. The long player is a mix of dirty room techno and minimal manipulation. Mood swings all the while pumping the bass and keeping the energy flow steady. A twisted attack for the massive. Bau’s mix of ‘Empty Plate’ is pure prime time. The groove rocks the floor with basshits and nervous drums. The mix is a greating mixing tool for all styles. Marco Polo’s mix strips it back to basics. The swingin’ jack rhythms highlight and the breakdowns peak perfectly. Full on minimal...maybe.
Detroit’s new “soundshift” imprint makes a stunning debut with this intoxicating two-tracker. Opening up is the Soultek remix of Billy Dalessandro’s smashing “Don’t Sleep” release (which was found in the many sets of Dan Bell, Ame, Annie Mac & Pete Tong last month) This mix is nothing short of brilliant and will certainly capture the hearts and sets of all those Mathew Jonson or Loco Dice fans out there. It has a subtlety that really creeps up on you and before you know it you’re tapping your feet and zoning out listening to the intricacies of the music. Truly minimal, there are loads of space within the track which is somewhat similar to the original but still a world apart, particularly in the fantastically eerie synth programming. In the forefront of the song is the shimmering and haunting vocal loop, “Don’t Sleep” which has an almost hypnotic effect. (Think Richie Hawtin in Closer) The melody of the title is a delicate affair which sips cocktails in the company of some nicely chosen whirring and echoing noises. The build is effected so subtly it verges on melancholy but halfway through a rumbling bassline, appregiated melody and backbeat hi-hat pattern announce a funkier escalation. It closes off in a spacey array of emissions, string plucks and sputtering melodies which demand attention until it’s mesmerizing vocal hook closes. The second song is a Soultek remix of soundshift’s “Drifting Into View” which we can only classify as interstellar space funk for lovers of subconscious techno. It’s hypnotic, daring and well-tempered synthesizer based minimal arpeggio’s still remain the key ingredient. Overall, this is a beautifully balanced release with everything feeling nicely placed and well structured. Something wicked has certainly come our way & it’s name is soundshift….. A TIP FOR ALL MINIMAL MINDED PEOPLE!
“La Primera” from Signal Deluxe is another must-have promoted by ELP Music. The outstanding vanguard composition is a real enrichment for the whole techno and minimal world. “Zementgarten” creates a whirring, stamping, knocking intoxication you surely can’t resist. “Perdida” and “Perda In The Garden” add colour to their work and as usual flavoured by the typical Signal Deluxe – touch. Conclusion: This Vinyl-Sensation is a masterpiece and not only the beautiful cover make it stand out from the crowd!
Claque Musique's second release pairs Sardinia native Renato Figoli's "Viva Viva L'olio D'oliva" with an accompanying remix by young Naples artist Massi DL (Massimo Di Lena). Though Figoli (Lo-Fi Stereo, Gumption Recordings, Trapez) opens the cut restrainedly with bleepy burblings, the kick drum pattern subtly intensifies until, two-minutes in, a pulsating bass line transforms the track into a surging club-house banger. Figoli keeps things interesting by incrementally adding fragmented voice snippets that slip comfortably into the groove and by exploiting tension and release with well-timed dropouts and breakdowns. On the B side, Massi DL (Safari Electronique, Frankie Rec) eschews buildups altogether, opting to leap from the gate with a deep and infectious dance groove overlaid by voice fragments that resemble punctuating barks. Acidy synth effects give the tune fleeting psychotropic character before the cut slams into gear with a massive groove.
